ATMO 9/23 Hurricanes Con't

Storm Surge:
- Potential for damage is based on storm size and wind strengths, slope of coastline (gradual = worse surge, steep = lesser surge), and timing according to high and low tide times, also if there is a river or bay in the storm surge area
- Storm surge occurs on the right-front quadrant of the storm where the strongest forward winds are

Atlantic Hurricanes and their effect on the US:
- Peak of season is September 10th (sea surface temperatures are the highest)

Latest Active Season Linked to Global Warming?:
- General increase in sea surface temperatures
- Scientifically we can't prove there is a link
- Kerry Emanuel concluded that he found an increase in the strength of hurricanes over 35 years (not long enough to cover multiple decadal Atlantic cycle) and he's reconsidering his opinion

Growing and Building Toward Future Disasters?:
- Must include inflation, more "stuff" people have, and higher coastal populations
- Discussions as a society about whether or not to build-in and populate hurricane prone areas
- Utter stupidity (people choosing not to evacuate) causes a lot of deaths
- After we go through another period of slow activity will people forget how dangerous these storms really are?
